{"id":3710,"date":"2026-01-12T16:25:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T07:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kuis.kandagaigo.ac.jp\/rilae\/?page_id=3710"},"modified":"2026-06-18T20:36:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T11:36:25","slug":"lab16","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kuis.kandagaigo.ac.jp\/rilae\/lab16\/","title":{"rendered":"18 June 2026 LAb"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>16th LAb session.<\/em>&nbsp;Thursday, June 18, 2026 (Online)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theme<\/strong>: Getting Started with Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in Language Education<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1vNf3bLuwSGFEDOPi9PNhDbWulC1Fg9DuOe8aNTZ4jzM\/edit?tab=t.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LINK to the abstracts and recordings<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Organizers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Research Institute for Learner Autonomy Education<\/strong> (RILAE) at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/iapll.com\/SDT-SIG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Self-Determination Theory Special Interest Group<\/strong><\/a> (SDT SIG) of the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (<a href=\"https:\/\/iapll.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IAPLL<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Details<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by several SDT-related events happening from May to July 2026 around the world, in our 16th RILAE LAb Session (also the Inaugural Online IAPLL SDT SIG Symposium), we explored insights from SDT research and practice, especially intended to help colleagues in language education get started. There were 18 short presentations by both experienced scholars and newcomers to the field, sharing insights and applications of SDT in language education research and practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Selected speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>William Davis, University of Oklahoma, USA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jo Mynard, Kanda University of International Studies, Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quint Oga Baldwin, Waseda University, Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abigail Parish, University of Sheffield, UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scott Shelton-Strong, Kanda University of International Studies, Japan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Themes explored<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We invited colleagues in all contexts around the world to help us support newcomers to the field with this central question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">How Can Language Educators Get Started in SDT?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We included the following mini-presentation types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experience sharing, e.g.,&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your story: How did you get started in SDT? (5 minutes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct an interview with an SDT researcher (8-9 minutes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resource sharing (5 minutes), e.g.,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Book reviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summaries of events or presentations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research insights (5 minutes), e.g.,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Key studies suitable for replication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ready-to-use SDT instruments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which mini-theory to use for your research?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research sharing (7-8 minutes), e.g.,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overviews of studies in progress&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research summaries, including key takeaways for new researchers (these can be your own, or useful studies you are familiar with)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to construct or adapt a suitable research instrument?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What artifacts are ideal for understanding our learners\u2019 intrinsic motivation?
