14th LAb session: Thursday, 3rd July 2025

In our 14th LAb session, we would like to invite colleagues in all contexts around the world who can help us add to our understanding of motivation and language learning beyond the classroom. We are particularly interested in research or practice related to the following questions:

  • How do self-directed learners keep going? How can we learn from their stories?
  • What are the roles of interest and goals for autonomous language learners?
  • What theoretical frameworks are useful for understanding motivation and language learning beyond the classroom?
  • How can we prepare our learners to be self-directed learners outside the classroom?
  • Are self-directed learners always autonomous? How do we know? (and what’s the difference?)
  • What kinds of resources (e.g., journals, logs, diaries or other documentation) are useful for helping learners manage their learning beyond the classroom?
  • What tools can support reflection and trigger deeper-level thinking in learners outside the classroom?
  • What kinds of activities do learners do beyond the classroom to improve their target language?

We welcome theoretical, research, and practice-based short presentations from early-career researchers, practising teachers, learning advisors, and established scholars.

Details of the featured speakers and the exact schedule will be announced shortly.

All sessions are recorded and archived on the RILAE website.

Submit your proposal by Friday, June 13th. [PROPOSAL FORM]
